Meditation Space Ideas

Have it your way.

Meditation Space IdeasHere’s a sweeping generality for you: life can be hard, sometimes. We all cope in different ways. Some people do sports to blow off steam; some people use video games to distract themselves; some people would rather drown the difficulty in a nice chilled glass of Chardonnay. Science shows that one of the best ways to navigate the difficulties of life is by taking time to meditate.

Unfortunately, most of us don’t have meditation space ideas for how to create one, making it difficult to come by.

That’s we’ve come up with this list of meditation space ideas that will help you clear a space in your home and get on the path to less stress right away.

4 Meditation Space Ideas To Jumpstart The Process

You might not want to make this a monumental project or, ironically enough, add stress to your life with this project, so let’s streamline and simplify the process into 4 basic steps.

  1. Choose an appropriate space. The ideal meditation space is a place that meets as many of the following requirements as possible:
    • Lots of natural light. For most people, busy schedules and long winter nights mean they’re running short on Vitamin D. Meditation is the perfect time to catch up on that light deficit.
    • Fresh air. While a quiet outdoor space is wonderful for meditation, weather and crowded neighborhoods mean that the outdoors is not always the relaxing space we would wish it to be. In that case, good ventilation is an absolute must-have.
    • Quiet. A secluded area of the house is the best place to have your meditation space in. That way, not even summer vacation or visiting relatives can interrupt your time away.
  2. Strip it down. Studies show that clutter causes stress, so the more minimalist your space is, the better to be able to calm your mind in.
  3. Bring the outdoors in. Here at HOW, we’re big on incorporating natural elements in the interior floor plan, since they’re proven to A) improve air quality and B) reduce stress. A water fountain and some plants will ground and identify your space.
  4. Find what feels good. The key to a great meditation space design is not just copying what you see in magazines. If there’s a color that speaks to you, even if it’s not noted for its ‘soothing’ or ‘calming’ properties, choose that color! The same goes for artwork. Don’t choose design elements because you think they would look good in a meditation room, choose design elements because you feel comfortable around them, because they make you feel good.

And if creating a meditation space isn’t your idea of a good time, how about a man cave or in-home fitness center? Whatever you choose, we’re here to help turn your dream into a reality.

This summer, welcome your friends in style.

What does the best of summer mean to you? It could be any (or all!) of the following:

  • Backyard-Entertainment-DesignTaking in the sun in a lounge chair next to a clear blue pool with an iced coffee in hand.
  • Telling ghost stories, accompanied only by the sounds of crickets and the crackle of your fire.
  • Relaxing in quiet, air conditioned bliss, while children scamper gleefully about your backyard, their shouts and laughs muffled pleasantly by well-insulated windows.
  • Laughing with friends, enjoying the delightful sizzle of meat and brats grilling on your barbecue, a chilled craft beer in your hand.

If that sounds about right, then check out our list of ways to spice up your summer and kick up your backyard entertaining potential with these awesome backyard entertainment designs. (And if you’re an introvert, then you can take these backyard design ideas and just use them to make your backyard getaway even better.)

Backyard Entertainment: Designs That Kick It Up A Notch

The Barbecue:

If you’re looking for cool or unique ways to spice up your BBQ game, there is no shortage of options.

  1. The Hipster: Want to go out of the ordinary? How about a grill that looks like a pig? Or a ceramic Kamado grill? Or pretty much any grill/smoker designed by David Klose: baby carriages, airplanes, beer bottles. You name it, Klose made it into a grill.
  2. The Practical: Built-in or fold-up grills might tempt you: both options are great if you love to grill but you don’t love the space grills take up in your backyard entertainment design.
  3. The Deluxe: Do you want more than a barbecue? How about a barbecue/refrigerator/warming drawer/stovetop/storage/cocktail pro all in one? With Talos’ Outdoor Cooking Suite or Lynx professional grills, you’ll get all the luxury you’ve ever dreamed of in the comfort of your backyard.
  4. The Pizzaiolo: If you make it, they will come; nothing draws a crowd like homemade pizza straight out of the pizza oven! Whether wood-fired, gas, or electric, pizza ovens will help you channel your inner pizzaiolo, and make this the most delicious summer yet!

The Pool:

Need more options for pool-side fun, or maybe you’re just sick of pool clutter keeping you down? We’ve got great backyard designs with pool-side fun in mind!

  • Build A House. Most “pool houses” are rarely houses and barely sheds. However, How Building Services specializes in building pool houses that are both functional and beautiful, including custom features such as kitchenettes, changing rooms, covered patios, speaker systems and –most importantly– wifi capabilities!
  • Think outside the (pool) box. If you’re installing a pool for the first time this summer, feel free to try these jaw-dropping backyard design ideas and to get away from the traditional rectangular pool with different pool shapes, lazy rivers, water slides, etc.. Just keep in mind ease of cleaning if you’ll be doing that yourself.

How Building Services can work with you to implement energy efficient home design for your current home or your new property.

Energy Efficient Home Design: Great for Homeowners, Great for the Planet

Earth Day is on the horizon. On April 22nd, people all over the country will take a little extra time to pick up litter, plant a tree, or cut back on their energy usage. It’s a great way for us as a nation to remember the importance of caring for the Earth and reflect on ways we can reduce our impact on the environment.

But, of course, it’s only one day.

If we want to truly make a sustainable difference, it’s important to look for ways in which we can reduce our environmental impact each and every day, all year long. And one of the best ways we can do that is by investing in energy efficient home design. While it might not occur to us as readily as recycling or planting trees, building a home with an energy efficient design or updating and remodeling your current home to improve energy efficiency is one of the most effective, long-lasting actions you can personally take for the planet’s future.

And the best part? Energy efficient home plans don’t just help conserve the environment – it’s also a financially beneficial investment for homeowners.

Advances and Innovations in Energy Efficient Home Design

Did you know that per-household energy consumption has been on a steady decline over the course of the past three decades? Average household consumption has decreased from 114 million Btu to 89.6 million Btu per household unit.

Does this mean that consumers are becoming more conscious of their environmental impact? Hopefully! But, even more so, it demonstrates how successful the recent advances and innovations in energy efficient home design have been in reducing home energy usage.

Some of the most important improvements aren’t just better architecture, but the efficiency of home fixtures. Outdated appliances and home electronics can guzzle energy–and, consequently, money. New fixtures can go a long way in reducing home energy usage.

If you’re planning a new home, consider investing in the numerous innovative energy-reducing designs that architects are implementing. Installing high-efficiency HVAC (heat, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems can greatly decrease energy consumption and save on long-term expenses.

Consider the many options for improved insulation and air sealing, energy-efficient fenestration (ultra-sealed windows, doors, and skylights), daylighting (the use of skylights and windows to take maximum advantage of natural light), water heating systems with improved efficiency, and an overall design that consciously minimizes the energy usage need for effective space heating and cooling.

If you already are a homeowner and are considering updating or remodeling your house to a more energy efficient home design, your first step should be having a home energy assessment conducted; this will allow your home’s current energy usage to be assessed and analyzed. From there, the best means of reducing usage and the types of remodeled design and fixtures that would best improve efficiency can be determined.

If the financial and environmental benefits of energy-efficient home design plans are a priority for you, then you’ll want to look into the innovative energy-efficient home design features offered by How Building Services. It’s finally spring. The erratic winter is (hopefully) over, the birds are singing, the bees are buzzing, and you have a major case of cabin fever. Each beautiful day is calling you to go outside and soak up some Vitamin D.

So here’s a question: where do you go? Do you find yourself meeting friends at an outdoor bar, or taking your kids to the park? That might be a sign that your backyard just isn’t up to snuff. Why not utilize your backyard for more than just storing rusty patio furniture? Imagine having a space fit for backyard entertainment. Designs that create a new space are just around the corner!

Backyard Entertainment Designs: Idea Central

backyard entertainment!

Food, Food, Food!

Nothing brings people together like food, so it’s no surprise that this is number one on our list of backyard entertainment design tips. Built-in grills for BBQing, an outdoor fireplace or firepit: any of these options creates the opportunity to bond over eating. Say goodbye to awkward silences with burgers, ribs, and cocktails.

Eating is great. Eating while sitting down? That’s what takes backyard patio ideas from drab to fab. Go elegant with a beautiful table and comfortable chairs, or go informal with benches, couches, and well-placed steps.

A wonderful hardscape–whether it be an enlarged patio, elegant pergola, or romantic arbor–can work wonders.

Go Green

For backyard entertaining, landscape ideas are a must. Trees provide shade and a natural barrier from the elements. Topiary can make for beautiful statement pieces that add elegance or whimsy. And don’t forget gardens! According to, gardens are one of the most popular backyard entertainment design features. Even if you are limited space-wise, container gardens are lovely and provide a nice talking point, not to mention fresh fruits, herbs, and vegetables!

Add Some Romance

You always need good lighting: lanterns, outdoor chandeliers, string lights, etc.. But you can go beyond the functional, using lighting to create a romantic or intimate space. Fountains, while less a la mode, are also a great choice for adding romance to what could be an otherwise functional design. Your choice of color for chair cushions, flowers, etc., also plays into the kind of ambiance you want to create.

Splurge a Little

Apart from all these elements that make for great backyard entertainment design, you can also stand out by getting a cabana or a daybed, or by installing a hot tub or outdoor movie theatre. And if you’re thinking of backyard entertainment for kids, be sure to shop around for a great play structure.

The options are endless. If the process of combing through them and coming up with cohesive backyard entertainment designs  gets your idea-train going, contact How Building Services, where you can benefit from a lifetime commitment to making your dreams come true.

Cinco De Mayo means margaritas in style!

Let’s talk about designing the perfect entertainment home. If you love to entertain, you’re probably already starting to look forward to Cinco De Mayo. This year, Cinco De Mayo comes over a month after Easter–a break like that between festivals is almost unheard of. In fact, think of all the festivals we celebrate:

Home-Entertainment-DesignJanuary: New Year’s

February: Mardi Gras & Valentine’s Day

March: Saint Patrick’s Day & Easter

May: Cinco De Mayo, Mother’s Day, Memorial Day

June: Father’s Day

July: Independence Day

September: Labor Day

October: Halloween

November: Thanksgiving

December: Christmas

Almost every month has a big festival, but in that long stretch from March to May, kids are getting antsy in school, college students are so done with their classes, and the rains of April will probably start wearing on your nerves. Cinco De Mayo is perfectly timed–whether you’re hosting a glittery, balloon-filled party for your kid’s school friends, or a tasteful, chips & margherita party for your adult friends.

If you’re looking to build or remodel, now is the time to consider how to have a successful home entertainment design that gives you the freedom to celebrate and entertain for all our wonderful holidays–and more! But watch out; home entertainment design can easily go wrong!

4 Major Home Entertainment Design Mistakes to Avoid

  • The Generic Treatment
You see it on HGTV: people call in a designer and tell them, “I love to entertain.” So the designer nods understandingly, their perfectly-dyed, over-gelled blond hair barely nodding with them. The designer then takes only 22 minutes to size up the room, sell everything, rehaul it, and then put it back together in a way that makes the homeowner walk in with a ‘Wow.’But the designer didn’t consult the homeowner, they followed their own program. Sure it’s pretty, but does it fit the homeowner’s’ needs? Does it create a space in which they will feel at home entertaining? Don’t hand over all the decisions–take charge and give thought to what fits your entertaining lifestyle, whether it be elegant cocktail parties or cozy game nights.
  • Only Size Matters
Putting aside the age-old debate over whether or not size matters, Genevieve Lill writes the following on “Designers advise that it’s the scale that matters more than the size. Think about cartoon dining rooms where two people are sitting, usually uncomfortably, on opposite ends of an epically long table. This is not the environment most of us want to create when hosting guests at home.”
  • Be traditional
Kitchen. Dining Room. Living Room. The layouts of traditional homes are not very conducive to frequent entertaining. Most designers and architects opt for open floor plans, even if that means not having a set-apart dining room. Best of all, if you’re not drawing up designs for home entertainment, an open floor plan can easily be achieved with a skilled remodel.
  • 6 Chairs Max
One disadvantage of closed-off dining rooms with a set table and 6-8 chairs perfectly arranged around it is the limited seating you then have. Lill suggests that in order to eliminate a dependency on folding chairs, it’s a good idea to build extra seating into your home entertainment design. From strategically stashing extra chairs, to sliding ottomans and benches under coffee tables, your guests will have plenty of seating options.

From floor plans to seating, you deserve the elegant home entertainment interior that you’re searching for. If you avoid these four pitfalls, you’re already on the road to a successful entertaining season. With all the use you’ll get out of them, good designs for home entertainment won’t disappoint.
