If you are in the process of remodeling, or adding an addition to your home, you’re probably feeling emotions at opposite ends of the spectrum. On one hand, you’re excited about all the potential, dreaming of how different the befores & afters will be, and can’t wait to be using and enjoying your new space. On the other hand, you’re most likely dreading the uncertainty, chaos, dirt and dust often associated with a home renovation.

The home remodeling process doesn’t have to be one of stress and dread at all. By following these tips, you’ll enjoy the journey of creating a new space in your home:

Tips To A Stress-Free Addition/Remodel

  1. Remodeling AdditionGather your ideas before you begin planning. Explore sample home addition floor plans online. Visit showrooms to see finishes and products you’re considering purchasing in advance of beginning the physical project. Collect home addition ideas and inspiration images – whether online or from magazine clippings.
  2. Select a designer and contractor or design build firm carefully. Whether or not you do your homework ahead of time and take the time to research the designer and builder you are considering can make or break the entire process. A recommendation from a friend or family member is good, but nothing can take the place of a comprehensive vetting process by you.
  3. Set realistic expectations. A large addition remodeling project will take time. Before the project begins, discuss how communication will be handled should a problem arise during construction. This will minimize any conflicts and questions that could come up (and during home renovation projects, they often do!). As a general rule of thumb, the more comprehensive the plan is upfront, the smoother the construction process will go.
  4. Make a plan for getting through the construction phase. There is no set plan, of course, as every family and remodel is different and unique. Depending on the scope of the project, you may consider relocating for a time. If the construction will be contained to one area in your home, figure out how to make life as easy as possible by rearranging, if need be, to make your routine flow smoothly.
